Cuppasana: What is it?
Cuppasana is a combination of Yin Yoga poses with the addition/placement of Cupping. During a group class you will be lead through a series of Yin Yoga poses and cups will be applied to various sections of your body. By using Cuppasana, we are focusing on:
- Stimulating and Relaxing the Nervous system.
- Stretching the fascia and release old tension patterns.
- The drawing-out abilities, of cupping, which have massive effects on trigger points, or "knots" within the muscle, and allow chronic pain patterns to resolve.
What does Cupping do?
- Provides "negative pressure" suction to the skin and can affect up to 4 inches deep into the muscles and fascia, pulling them upwards to cause movement in a different way.
- It can draw out metabolites from deep within the tissue. This is why Cupping can often leave dark marks.
- Cupping, when added to a movement practice like Yoga, can be very dynamic, and relaxing for the nervous system, allowing chronic pain patterns to subside.
What's up with the dark marks?
- A completely normal response to cupping, espically the first few times an area has been cupped.
- They can look like bruising but they are not actucal bruises.
- Bruises are caused by impact injures or damage to the blood vessels
- Cupping marks tend to be comprised of blood which has lingered in deeper layers of tissue instead of blood which as pooled in an area due to injury.
- Cupping marks are NOT tender to the touch and resolve within 3 days to 2 weeks in some cases.
- We do not intend to cause cupping marks. If no marks were left behind, this is not an indication that the treatment was not therapeutic. Only that the area in question has adequate circulation and less congestion.
You should not receive Cupping if you have/are:
- Blood clotting disorders
- Risk or history of heart attack or stroke
- Taking blood-thinning medicaions or using topical products with blood thinners as an active ingredient
- Liver or Kidney disorders
- Severe Neuropathy
- Severe Edema or Swelling of the Extremeties
- Disc Injuries - No cupping directly on the spine
- Bruises - Avoid cupping on bruises
- Varacose Verins - Avoid cupping on or around them
